And for inviting aesthetics, the canopies and sunshades offer interesting exterior elements that break up a simple flat surface of any building type whether it be conventional construction or with pre-engineered metal buildings as in the photo.

The accompanying picture shows the shading effect. The sunshades were installed at a height just above the windows so as to gain the most shading effect from the 4 ft. sunshade projection.

Enough to huff and puff and blow your house down. This 5 Guys Restaurant is only 15 miles inland from Ft Myers Beach, Florida and is in a windy 130 mph wind zone. The structure was built to the local codes and the Mapes Lumishade canopies attached to the building were engineered and stamped to meet these “location specific” (Ft Myers) codes for wind. There are 4 canopies on this building and all meet or exceed the local building codes of 130 mph sustained winds and 160 mph ultimate winds per architect specifications. All canopies were stamped for the specified performance by a registered Florida structural engineer prior to manufacture.

While downtown Del Ray Beach is still primarily a beach destination, it is also becoming a place to live and work for locals who like to be within walking distance to where things are happening and the beach.

But along with the benefit came the heat gain situation with the larger windows being used. It was a natural conclusion to provide a shading component to the building façade which faces south. Mapes SuperShade sunshade was specified and installed to achieve effective shading and heat gain moderation. As the building style was a clean contemporary look, the SuperShade needed be the same to blend in nicely. The optional mix of simple single blade supports and 8 inch airfoil blades were chosen as a good aesthetic fit for the project appearance. And to be truly effective in shading, a 7ft projection was specified for the 70ft long SuperShade sunshade. The feel of the building paint colors and field stone elements at the wall base invited similar color choices for the SuperShade which is finished in Mapes standard bronze baked enamel. The wall attachments and brackets were fabricated and supplied by Mapes to assure the 7ft project will remain firmly in place for years to come. The 7ft projection truly creates effective shading in the summer months and are positioned at a sunshine warming height for the winter months.

The challenge was in creating an inviting storefront and access to the second floor space over 1st floor retail space for the purpose of a Children's creative learning center. Brown Craig Turner Architects accomplished this nicely and is inviting to all ages. One of the elements that plays an important role in emotional identity for children and place finding for adults and offers shading functionality was in using a Mapes SuperShade at the top of the updated stair tower. Situated on the corner of the building and at the top of the stair/elevator tower is a custom painted bright green Mapes SuperShade that wraps the building corner. The sunshade is not large, but it has an open view to the street scape below and is very visible from at least a block away to assist in locating the address. Approaching it on foot, the green color jumps out at you from the sidewalk below and combined with other primary colors, appeals to children immediately and they are drawn to the building entrance to look up at the intriguing bright green “thing” way up there, where they are going.

But as the use of mini storage facilities has become almost a norm, the design appearance has been upgraded with more inviting styles and details. Your Space Storage in Joppatown, Maryland is an excellent example. In addition to a substantial overall upgrade in building style, Mapes Flat Soffit Super Lumideck canopies were added to the exterior facade over the customer reception area and side utility doors. The use of the deeper projection canopies not only protects the entrances but also offers substantial shading to the interior spaces on this southern facing building. In addition to the durable practicality of the Mapes canopies, a bright blue Kynar finish was used to compliment both the building color tones and also works well with other primary colors used on surrounding building items. The overall effect is both pleasing and inviting for something not known for being much more than a functional undertaking—storing of stuff. And the Mapes bright blue canopies are an important part of that first impression upon arriving—with the Kynar finish and durable construction, they will continue that function for years to come.
